The development of the Panzer III began in the mid-1930s, with the intention of making it the backbone of the Wehrmacht's armored battalions, alongside a smaller number of heavier vehicles (Panzer IV). Initially armed with a 37mm gun, the Panzer III quickly switched to a 50mm gun and, in the more advanced versions (Ausf. M and L), to the same 75/24 gun with 64 rounds, already adopted by the Panzer IV. Production ended in August 1943.
