Until the end of the 2nd World War, the brothers Reimar and Walter Horten were among the best-known designers for single-wing aircraft in Germany. They had brought the experience in this sector into a special unit, which as Sonderkommando 9 was responsible for the further development of single-wing aircraft. The development of the machine known as the Horten Ho IX, equipped with two BMW 003A-1 jet engines, began in 1942. While the first machine could only be completed as a glider due to difficulties with the jet engine, the second prototype received the Jumo 004B-1 as an engine. In 1944, the V2 made its first flight, reaching speeds of over 780 km/h. The series production of the hoards was transferred to the Gothaer Waggonfabrik and the type designation was changed to Go 229. The first machine of the Gothaer Waggonfabrik, the Go 229 A-O V3 received the Jumo 004C engines.
